2022 National Drug Strategy Household Survey

Taking part in the survey

The survey is available to complete in online, by telephone interview and by paper.

• Online
  Go to https://drugs2022.roymorgan.com and enter the number that the interviewer gave you. We recommend that you complete the survey on a tablet or a computer rather than on a smartphone, as it will be easier to read and complete on a larger screen. Alternatively, you can scan the QR code on the front page of the paper version of the questionnaire and then enter the form number displayed on the top left of that page. You can leave the survey anytime and return to it (using the above procedures) and you’ll be taken directly to where you left off.
• By phone
  If you elect to complete the survey by phone, an interviewer will call you at a prearranged time that suits you to complete the survey.

• On paper
  All you need to do is fill in the paper questionnaire and place it in the white strictly confidential envelope provided. The interviewer will arrange a date and time to collect it.

Roy Morgan interviewers will return to households at an agreed time (2-3 days after initial contact) or remind you to complete the survey online.

How long will the survey take?

The survey usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes to complete, depending on your responses.

What is the survey about?

This survey gives you the opportunity to provide your views on issues such as support for drug-related policies and laws, and helps to estimate the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in Australia. Researchers and policymakers use the results to better understand the issues surrounding tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.

I don’t drink alcohol, smoke tobacco or take other drugs so should I take part in the survey?

Yes please. Everyone’s answers are important. We need to obtain responses from a broad range of people so that the results represent the views and behaviours of all Australians. The results will help drive change and aid in monitoring the effectiveness of policies and initiatives.

Why was I selected to complete the survey?

Your household was selected randomly from all Australian households and we then randomly select one person aged 14 and over in your household to complete the survey.

Using this selection method makes it more likely that the results are representative of Australia as a whole.

Do I have to complete the survey?

The survey is voluntary, but your participation is important so that we can obtain information from a wide cross-section of the population. The more people who complete the survey, the more useful the information will be.

How are the results used?

The results from this survey are used extensively by policymakers and researchers to better understand the issues surrounding tobacco, alcohol and other drugs to help improve the health and wellbeing of people in your community and of all Australians.

These results will help drive change and monitor the effectiveness of policies and initiatives. The data provides important insights and helps the government and researchers understand whether various initiatives are working and how to best allocate resources to combat the harms caused by drug and alcohol use. Your responses will help to inform the development of new programs aimed at reducing drug-related harms.

Results from this survey will be analysed by the AIHW and a report about the results will be published on the AIHW website.

How is my privacy protected?

The survey results are confidential, and strictly protected by law. Section 29 of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Act 1987 prohibits the release of any information about individuals collected in the survey. No results or other data that could possibly identify individuals will be released.

The research complies with the Privacy Act 1988 and the information is only used for research purposes. This means that the information you provide cannot be used for activities that focus on individuals, like compliance or law enforcement.

Roy Morgan works to the Code of Professional Behaviour of the Australian Market and Social Research Society.

The AIHW Ethics Committee has reviewed and approved the survey project.

What if my paper questionnaire is not collected?

You can contact us on 1800 000 293 or email us at drugsurvey@roymorgan.com and we’ll arrange for an interviewer to pick it up. Alternatively, you can request a reply paid enveloped to mail the questionnaire back.

What if I cannot access the online survey?
